Cameroon’s PHP Loses CFA5.78bn as Banana Revenue Falls

Plantations du Haut Penja, Cameroon’s leading banana exporter and a subsidiary of Compagnie Fruitière, recorded a CFA5.78 billion loss in 2025 as its revenue dropped sharply despite only a marginal reduction in the volume of bananas exported.

The company’s revenue fell from €129.25 million in 2024 to €87.39 million in 2025, representing a decline of 32.4 per cent.

Its loss also widened during the year, rising from €7.04 million, or approximately CFA4.62 billion, in 2024 to €8.8 million, equivalent to about CFA5.78 billion, in 2025.

The latest figures mean PHP accumulated losses of approximately CFA10.4 billion over 2024 and 2025.

The financial deterioration occurred despite relatively stable export volumes.

PHP shipped about 151,713 tonnes of bananas in 2025, compared with 153,258 tonnes the previous year. That represents only a one per cent reduction in shipments.

The figures highlight the pressure facing agricultural exporters when market prices and operating conditions weaken, even where production and export volumes remain relatively steady.

Cameroon’s wider banana industry performed differently during the same period.

National banana exports reached 225,345 tonnes in 2025, compared with 210,686 tonnes in 2024, representing growth of approximately seven per cent.

PHP consequently experienced a financial decline at a time when the country’s overall banana export volumes were expanding.

International prices were another factor affecting the industry. Government export data showed that international banana prices averaged about 11.2 per cent lower in 2025.

However, the price decline was substantially smaller than PHP’s 32.4 per cent revenue contraction, indicating that the company’s financial difficulties cannot be explained by international prices alone.

PHP is a major employer and commercial player in Cameroon’s agricultural economy, with its operations connecting farmers, workers, transport providers, exporters and international markets.

The company’s financial performance is therefore significant for the wider Penja agricultural economy.

The results also underline a broader challenge for African agricultural exporters: higher export volumes do not automatically guarantee stronger earnings.

Companies operating in commodity markets remain exposed to international prices, production costs, logistics, exchange-rate dynamics and other business pressures.

PHP’s 2025 results will likely increase attention on the sustainability of Cameroon’s banana export model and the measures needed to ensure that rising export volumes translate into stronger returns for producers and businesses.

For international investors and members of the Cameroonian diaspora following the country’s agricultural sector, the figures offer an indication of the financial pressures affecting one of its most important export businesses.
