Racing to Glory: The 30th Mount Cameroon Race of Hope Sets New Records

The 30th edition of the prestigious Mount Cameroon Race of Hope took center stage on February 22, 2025, in the historic town of Buea, Cameroon. This high-stakes marathon, a hallmark of resilience and endurance since its inception in 1973, saw a thrilling competition among over 700 athletes from 12 delegations, including 11 different countries. As participants braved the grueling 42-kilometer ascent and descent of Mount Cameroon, also known as the Chariot of the Gods, they demonstrated the true spirit of sportsmanship and perseverance.

The Mount Cameroon Race of Hope is more than just an athletic contest; it is a vibrant cultural spectacle that unites competitors and spectators from diverse backgrounds. This year’s event was flagged off at the Molyko Omnisport Stadium by Cameroon’s Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, in the presence of other dignitaries, including South West Regional Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai, and the Paramount Ruler of Buea, Robert Esuka Endeley. Their presence reaffirmed the race’s significance as a platform for unity, national pride, and international collaboration.

As expected, the race was fiercely contested, with athletes from Kumbo, North West Region, dominating the podium. In the senior male category, Ushen Hassan emerged victorious, completing the arduous challenge in an impressive 4 hours, 40 minutes, and 9 seconds. He was closely followed by Ali Mohamadou and Abdou Amadou, who secured second and third places, respectively.

In the female senior category, Ngalim Lisette stamped her authority on the competition, proving her mettle against an elite field of runners. Meanwhile, the legendary “Queen of the Mountain,” Sarah Etonge, reaffirmed her status by winning the veteran female category, adding yet another triumph to her decorated career. In the junior category, Sale Saibou and Sever Telma emerged as the male and female champions, respectively.

Security was a major priority at this year’s event following the unfortunate incidents of 2023, where explosive devices injured over 19 athletes. The Cameroonian authorities deployed heightened security measures, ensuring a safe and seamless competition for both participants and spectators.
