For the first time in eight years, Nigerian women in Buea, Southwest Region of Cameroon, proudly joined the International Women’s Day (IWD) march past, waving both the Nigerian and Cameroonian flags in a powerful display of unity, cultural pride, and friendship between the two nations. The historic event, held under the supervision of Her Excellency Rabiat Olabisi Coker, the spouse of the Consul General of Nigeria in Buea, reinforced the strong ties that bind Nigerians and Cameroonians together.

International Women’s Day in Cameroon is widely recognized as a day of empowerment, reflection, and advocacy for gender equality. This year’s theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” emphasized the importance of inclusivity and the collective advancement of women’s rights. Nigerian women in Buea seized the moment, making a strong comeback to the annual celebration after nearly a decade of absence.

The march was more than just a symbolic presence; it was a statement of resilience, belonging, and commitment to fostering peace between both nations. Caroline Nkechi Nwoko, President of the Nigerian Women in Buea, underscored the importance of their participation:

“Nigeria and Cameroon are one and indivisible. We are peace-loving people bound by history, culture, and mutual respect. Our presence today affirms our dedication to unity, while also celebrating the strength and role of women in society.”

Buea, famously known as the “City of Legendary Hospitality,” has long been home to a thriving Nigerian community. Beyond the march, the event served as an opportunity to celebrate the warmth and acceptance that Nigerians continue to experience in Cameroon.

President Nkechi Nwoko expressed gratitude on behalf of Nigerian women, saying:

“The love and acceptance we receive here is overwhelming. Today, as we celebrate womanhood, we also celebrate the unity that binds us together. The hospitality of Cameroonians has made this place a true home away from home.”

Dressed in vibrant traditional attire, the Nigerian women walked with confidence, their colors blending seamlessly with the thousands of other women marching to highlight the importance of gender equality and social progress.

As they marched, the women carried a resounding message: Peace knows no borders, and true sisterhood transcends nationality. Their participation not only marked a return to a longstanding tradition but also set the stage for deeper collaboration and engagement between Nigerian and Cameroonian women in Buea.

The event reinforced the vision of the Consulate General of Nigeria in Buea—led by Consul General, His Excellency, Taofik Coker—in strengthening diplomatic, economic, and social ties between Nigerians and their host communities in Cameroon.

In a world where divisions often make headlines, the Nigerian women in Buea used International Women’s Day to rewrite the narrative. Their presence was a powerful testament to the idea that borders may separate nations, but they can never divide the spirit of togetherness.

With chants of unity, smiles of hope, and the waving of flags, the Nigerian women of Buea sent a clear message to the world:

We are one people. One Love. One future.
