Pope Francis in Critical Condition as He Battles Lung Infection and Kidney Complications

Pope Francis, 88, remains in critical condition at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for pneumonia and a complex lung infection. The Vatican confirmed that recent blood tests indicate early signs of kidney failure, adding another layer of concern to his health battle.

Despite his condition, officials say the Pope had a stable night and is resting. “The night passed well, the Pope slept and is resting,” a Vatican statement read. He remains under close medical supervision as he enters his 11th day in the hospital—marking his longest stay since becoming the leader of the Catholic Church in 2013.

The pontiff was admitted on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties. Although doctors report that his respiratory crises have subsided, he continues to require high-flow oxygen support. Medical teams are also closely monitoring his platelet levels, which are crucial for blood clotting, though they have remained stable since the weekend.

Due to the complexity of his condition, doctors remain cautious. “The prognosis remains reserved,” they stated, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and treatment adjustments.

From his hospital bed, Pope Francis expressed gratitude to the medical staff and the countless people worldwide offering prayers and support. “I am confidently continuing my hospitalization at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment – and rest is also part of the therapy!” he shared in a message on Sunday.

As concerns grow over the Pope’s health, the Vatican has called for prayers, with special nighttime vigils taking place in St. Peter’s Square. The world watches closely, hoping for his recovery.
