Governor Alex Otti Empowers Abia State with Electricity Law

In a landmark move towards energy independence, Governor Alex Otti has signed the Abia State Electricity Bill into law, granting the state the authority to regulate its electricity market. This historic legislation paves the way for improved power supply, business growth, and infrastructural development in Abia.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Governor Otti emphasized that the law would support the state’s long-term power initiatives, ensuring that investments in the electricity sector are protected. The state is set to establish the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA), which will oversee power distribution and expansion.

With this development, the government’s plan to extend electricity to the remaining eight LGAs in the state is gaining momentum. Having successfully secured power supply for nine LGAs through Geometric Power Ltd, the administration is now working on integrating the rest of Abia under the Umuahia ring-fence project. Governor Otti also highlighted the state’s ambition to generate surplus power, which could be supplied to other Southeastern and South-South states, creating additional revenue streams for Abia.

Acknowledging the collaborative effort behind the bill, Governor Otti commended the Abia State House of Assembly for its swift and diligent passage of the legislation. He also expressed gratitude to development partners and stakeholders who contributed to shaping the policy framework.

The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the bill as a milestone for the state, reinforcing Abia’s economic vision under Governor Otti’s leadership. Similarly, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, lauded the governor for fulfilling his promise to provide independent power for the state, aligning with the Electricity Act of 2023.

With this bold step, Governor Alex Otti has set Abia on a transformative path, ensuring stable electricity for businesses, households, and industries—an achievement that will drive economic prosperity and development in the state.
